Historical context

Lisbon sent a heavily armed fleet to break the Muslim and Venetian grip on the spice trade after da Gama's return. Its wide Atlantic tack was designed to catch the favourable winds — and brought Portugal a continent.

The voyage, step by step

1. The great fleet departs

   1500 CE

   Cabral leads a heavily armed fleet to secure the new sea route to India.

2. Brazil claimed

   1500 CE

   Sweeping far west in the Atlantic, he reaches the coast of Brazil and claims it for Portugal.

3. Storms in the South Atlantic

   1500 CE

   A storm sinks four ships and drowns Bartolomeu Dias before the fleet reaches India.

4. Factories in India

   1501 CE

   Cabral reaches Calicut and establishes Portuguese trading posts.

Outcome

Claimed Brazil and reached India.
